Final exam information

The final exam will be held in class on Thursday, September 11, 2008, from 2:00 to 3:20 pm. You will be permitted a calculator and a single page -- one side by popular demand I'll allow both sides -- of handwritten notes which must be handed in with the exam. A standard normal table will be provided.

The following chapters from your book will be covered on the exam:

  • Chapter 1: sections 1.1 to 1.5
  • Chapter 2: sections 2.1 to 2.5
  • Chapter 3: all sections
  • Chapter 4: sections 4.1 to 4.7 (including subsections), 4.8.1, 4.8.2, and 4.9
  • Chapter 5: sections 5.1 to 5.5 (including 5.4.1), 5.6.1, 5.6.3, 5.6.4, 5.7
  • Chapter 6: sections 6.1 to 6.5, and 6.7
  • Chapter 7: 7.1, 7.2 (NOT 7.2.1 and 7.2.2), 7.4 to 7.6 (including subsections)

You should also review section 7.9 on the Stieltjes integral, although I will not be explicitly testing you on it. It's a fairly simple generalization of the Riemann integral that is quite useful in probability.

The final exam may also, time permitting, cover (in order of likelihood):

  • Chapter 8: 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4
  • Chapter 7: 7.7 and 7.7.1

I will announce on Monday which -- if any -- of those will be included.

If you plan to continue to 120B, you should take a day out of the remainder of the summer to briefly work through whatever sections from the list above we do not get to. If you plan to take 160A, you might also consider reading sections 9.1, 9.2, and 10.1 to 10.3.
