Professional Experience

Senior Network Security Researcher - ICF International

Researcher at Army Research Laboratory, August 2011 - Present

Participating in ongoing fundamental 6.1 research into a variety of topics related to network security at Army Research Laboratory.

Postdoctoral Researcher - UCSB Department of Computer Science

Postdoctoral researcher - Research faculty - July 2010 to August 2011

Contributing to ongoing research in the UCSB CSE group, including work on synchronization properties of large networks of stochastic oscillators, synchronization and entrainment of oscillators under noisy conditions, and computational modeling and simulation of gene/protein regulatory networks.

Research Associate - UCSB Department of Statistics and Applied Probability

Graduate research associate - June 2006 to June 2010

Under the supervision of department faculty, participated in ongoing research within the systems biology program in developing a stochastic model for the behavior of the suprachiasmatic nucleus in maintaining circadian rhythms in both rat and fruit fly model organisms. Regular presenter at group meetings.

Consultant - Amgen Inc.

Part-time consultant to Drug Product Process Development, January 2006 - January 2007

Provided techincal evaluation of reports and submissions. Worked with DPPD personnel to resolve technical questions related to shearing effects and details of previous FDA commitments and communications. Provided advice on harmonizing current technical work with previous filings.

Amgen Inc., Thousand Oaks, CA

Drug Product Process Development, June 2000 - August 2005

Responsible for providing technical support for clinical and commercial products, including Aranesp, Enbrel, Epogen, Infergen, and multiple preclinical programs. Support included non-conformance resolution, process transfers, filing support, process optimizations, and yield improvements.

  • Applied DOE and statistical methods to improve processing, ensure operational success, and lower costs of commercial production and commercial product transfers.
  • Supported transfer of Enbrel Formulation/Fill/Finish operations to contract manufacturer, resulting in annual benefit of up to $33M and zero process-related FDA comments on filing.
  • Improved processing for Aranesp Multi-dose formulation, resulting in $10M cost avoidance.
  • Provided DOE and control chart interpretation for 6-sigma project that increased Enbrel yields an average of 6%, resulting in additional 200,000 units or ~$26M revenue/year.
  • Provided equipment and process analysis for project to expand Amgen Manufacturing Limited syringe filling
capabilities, leading to approximate doubling of syringe filling capacity.
  • Under aggressive timelines, transferred Formulation/Fill/Finish processes for two major commercial products (Aranesp and Enbrel) to commercial dosage form manufacturing.
  • Transferred 15 clinical products/formulations to clinical manufacturing with 100% success rate.

BASF Bioresearch Corporation, Worcester, MA

Quality Control Summer 1999

Worked in Microbiology and Raw Materials groups of Quality Control. Responsible for assays of incoming raw materials and release to manufacturing, and routine environmental monitoring of production areas.

  • Reviewed and provided documentation support for statistical redesign of environmental monitoring sampling plan for daily monitoring of manufacturing areas
  • Implemented MS-Access database for recording and trending daily water testing data from manufacturing area.

Genzyme Transgenics Corporation, Framingham, MA

Purification Process Development/Bioprocess Engineering Summer 1998

Provided analytical and engineering support for transgenic production of recombinant human ATIII protein in goat milk, including facility, equipment, and process design for material collection and initial purification steps.

  • Designed and executed process optimization experiment for initial clarification steps of protein-containing recombinant goat milk, presenting at quarterly departmental meeting. Potential for $200k in equipment savings as well as doubling per-batch process throughput.
  • Contributed to design, purchase, and qualification of collection and storage system for transgenic goat milk in compliance with both cGMP requirements, and the requirements of the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance.
  • Designed and executed sterilization studies for Fill/Finish and Lyophilization groups.
